Lifestyle Changes for Greater Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Health Ministry/Initiative

We're nearing the end of February, Heart Month. Our focus on eating healthy and loving our heart should be a year-round activity.

Hilton Head Regional Healthcare partnered with the SERG Restaurant Group and hosted a FREE seminar & cooking Demo: "Eat Smart, Love Your Heart" at the Poseidon Rooftop on Hilton Head Island, SC. On Tuesday, February 25, 2020, approximately 50 registered participants observed the cooking demonstrations and enjoyed a three-course Mediterranean-style lunch. The roasted salad was presented by Chef Chris Carge of Poseidon. Chef Rob Britton of Marley's Island Grill & Shrimp Shack prepared the main entree, pan-roasted salmon. The avocado chocolate mousse was the highlight and a delightful dessert that was demonstrated by Chef Chaun Bescos of Wise Guys. Dr. Ravina Balchandani, MD, Interventional Cardiologist provided a "Dash of Doctorly Advice." She presented useful information about heart health. The MIND Diet was highlighted in the presentation.

The MIND Diet is designed to prevent dementia and loss of brain function as you age.

It combines the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet to create a dietary pattern that focuses specifically on brain health.

A MINDful Diet

Since the MIND diet is based on the Mediterranean-style and DASH diets, let’s take a brief look at those two eating plans first.

The Mediterranean-style diet is rich in vegetables and fruits, nuts, legumes, and whole grains. Fish and seafood are the primary sources of animal protein, olive oil is the main source of fat, and wine is allowed in moderation. Poultry and dairy foods are consumed in moderation, and red meat and sweets are rarely eaten.

DASH is similar to the Mediterranean-style diet in that it’s based on getting plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains along with beans, nuts, and lean animal proteins. Plus, it limits fats and added sugars.

Since both of these diets are based on whole foods, they’re naturally lower in sodium, added sugar, and refined grains than a traditional Western diet, which often includes highly processed foods, including sugary beverages, fast foods, and fried foods.

Likewise, the MIND diet also includes plenty of whole foods—fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and nuts—as well as olive oil, fish, and poultry. However, the MIND diet recommends eating certain foods at certain frequencies. For example, it calls for at least six servings a week of leafy green vegetables and at least two servings a week of berries (especially strawberries and blueberries).

Thus, one can glean that Hilton Head Regional Healthcare and SERG Restaurant Group are working cooperatively to promote heart and brain health in the HHI/Bluffton community. If you don't live in the HHI/Bluffton area, perhaps you can be the catalyst for starting a conversation about the preparation of healthy foods at home and in area restaurants.
